Curriculum

The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is an international curriculum used by many schools across the globe. The curriculum allows teachers to acknowledge multiple-intelligences in each learner by focusing on a combination of academic, personal and international learning. A child is empowered to learn and interact through activities that call for application of the knowledge and skills gained. This makes the whole learning experience real and meaningful. When combined with strong educational values, our learners strive to excel, persevere, inquire, think critically and reflect.

At the core of the IPC are clearly defined learning goals in every subject of the curriculum. Core subjects include the Science, History, Society, Technology, Geography, ICT (Information Communication and Technology), International learning, Music and Arts.

As we learn to live in a world without boundaries, it is equally important to teach young learners to be culturally sensitive and understanding of the meaning of respect and empathy. A sense of open-mindedness is crucial and positive conflict resolution is a natural part of everyday life as young learners develop successful peer relations. All these elements combined contribute to learners being connected with the school and with their peers.

We know that children are born ready, able, curious and eager to learn. Playgroup is for ages 18 to 24 months and forms the foundations for a sequential play-and-inquiry based learning program at Quayside Isle Preparatory School. Children develop quickly in the early years and our Early Years Practitioners at QuIPS aim to help every child have the best possible start in life. This program creates endless opportunities for children to interact and engage in a safe and nurturing environment.

Children in Playgroup learn through authentic play and multi-sensorial activities that help them develop their socio-emotional skills as well as lay the base for further school experience. Our personalised approach to learning allows for every child to be challenged adequately, based on their unique developmental stage.

Playgroup children are exposed to all the Specialist Programs QuIPS offers, from Mandarin, Art, Music & Movement, to PE Playball, Yoga and Library. Every child will experience the beauty of their surroundings through nature exploration around the Isle. The Program’s main focus is on nurturing every child’s independence and self-care, while developing their language and essential motor skills.

A low student-teacher ratio of 5:2 ensures every child receives individualized attention and support throughout the school day.

QuIPS Nursery class is for ages 2 – 3 years. Children develop quickly in the early years and QuIPS teachers aim to provide every child with the best possible start at school. Students in Nursery learn, grow and blossom through child-directed learning and play, with lots of meaningful hands-on engaging activities.

Prime areas of learning covered include personal social and emotional development, communication and language, and physical development. Specific areas are the essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society. These include Literacy, Math, understanding the world, and the expressive arts.  
Nursery at QuIPS taps into the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC-UK) along side an extensive Phonology and Literacy program. Students take part in all Specialist Programs QuIPS offers from Mandarin, Art, Music & Movement, to Playball, Yoga and Library.

At QuIPS, Nursery teachers focus on nurturing every child’s independence and self-care, while developing their language and essential motor skills. Nursery students apply their learning actively through their surroundings along the Isle on the island of Sentosa, combining indoor and outdoor learning seamlessly.

Pre-Reception at QuIPS is targeted for children 3 to 4 years. Pre-Reception offers a blend of child-directed play and teacher directed activities to achieve important milestone development in areas ranging from fine motor skills, gross motor skills, executive functioning skills, to socio-emotional abilities and cognition. Children are introduced to new ideas through inquiry and encouraged to use their imagination and emerging language and motor skills to investigate and problem solve. Pre-Reception at QuIPS taps into the International Early Years Curriculum (UK) alongside a well-recognised UK Phonology and Literacy program, in addition to furthering their numeracy and mathematical understanding. Students take part in all Specialist Programs QuIPS offers from Mandarin, Art, Music & Drama, to PE Playball, Yoga and Library. Every child applies their learning actively through their surroundings along the Isle and the island of Sentosa.
A low student-teacher ratio of 6:2 ensures every child receives individualized attention and support throughout the school day.

Reception at QuIPS is targeted for children aged 4 to 5 years. Children are ready, able, and eager to learn as we prepare Reception students for the next big leap into Year 1, Keystage 1. Reception children learn best through play, but their malleable minds also make this a prime time for introducing new concepts and more structured learning. Our teachers offer a blend of child-directed play and teacher directed activities in the core subjects of Literacy and Numeracy. Reception at QuIPS introduces new ideas of Inquiry through the International Early Years Curriculum (UK) inquiry-based curriculum and encourages every student to use their imagination and emerging language and motor skills to investigate and problem solve. Students take part in all Specialist Programs QuIPS offers from Mandarin, Art, Music & Drama, to PE Playball, Yoga and Library. Every child applies their learning actively through their surroundings on the island of Sentosa with frequent field trips off the island as well. Year 1 (5-6 years)

Year 1 at QuIPS is targeted for children aged 5 to 6 years and in line with the UK framework which marks the first year of Keystage 1. QuIPS’ philosophy encouraging play, exploration, learning, creating and thinking, remain paramount to students learning even as they enter the formal stages of education.

Children continue to learn best through play, and their malleable minds make this a prime time for introducing new concepts and more structured learning.

Our teachers offer a blend of child-directed play and teacher directed activities through a well-recognised UK literacy programme which addresses the Keystage 1 goals. Students abilities are addressed and learning is personalised to ensure that every child is progressing according to their pace.

From daily journal writing, scope and sequence phonics, to reading comprehension, literacy forms one of the core components at QuIPS and is actively in play throughout every school day. Station-based Numeracy activities address the numeracy goals for Keystage 1, as children solidify the very foundations of math from the concrete to the abstract, exploring, practising and finally, consolidating. Children are expected to apply concepts through everyday activities and the outdoors, making sense of their learning, and increasing familiarity of the topics covered.

Year 2 marks the final leg in UK’s Key Stage 1 curriculum. Here, students look towards more abstract and complex reasoning across subjects, with levels of confidence increasing simultaneously as expected. QuIPS teachers are well aware of the expectations and equally aware that every child develops at their own pace and no two brains are alike. Core subjects are tailored to every child’s abilities, strengths and needs without compromising on resources.
Our teachers continue to offer a blend of child-directed play and teacher directed activities through a well-recognised UK literacy programme which addresses the Keystage 1 goals. Daily writing exercises, advance-stage phonics, increasing sub-skills in reading comprehension, the Year 2 literacy component builds up on the basics, stretching students literacy skills. Physical Education

Our Physical Education Programme is run by the ProActive team and is a multi-sports programme designed to support children in developing a wide range of sports skills. Through a variety of skill and game-based activities, the programme aims to develop fundamental movement skills and ignite a passion for sports at a young age.
Physical Education is more than just sports instruction. This holistic approach promotes physical, emotional, cognitive and social development. Children learn valuable skills in attention and concentration, develop confidence, form and solidify friendships.

Performance Arts

At our school, students will have abundant opportunities to enhance their vocal skills through weekly classes and in-school performances. They will develop a comprehensive understanding of pitch and volume while participating in a diverse range of songs and performances, all centered around class themes. These performances provide a platform for students to showcase their talents and build confidence in front of an audience. Additionally, students will have the chance to explore movement by experimenting with variations in space (such as high and low), time (including freeze, stop, and go), and energy (ranging from slow to fast, free flowing to staccato, and more) during these performances. It is an exciting and enriching experience that allows students to express themselves creatively and develop their skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Mandarin

Mandarin is an integral part of QuIPS' core curriculum, offering students an immersive approach to learning. Our Mandarin lessons are directly linked to the themes covered in the IEYC and IPC, providing a seamless integration of language and content. This approach supports children in developing their listening and speaking skills from an early age, fostering a strong foundation in Mandarin language acquisition.

Understanding that language and culture are deeply interconnected, QuIPS students are exposed to various cultural elements alongside their language studies. Through activities centered around music, calligraphy, food, and traditional celebrations, students gain a holistic understanding of Mandarin and its rich cultural heritage. This immersive and culturally diverse environment creates a dynamic learning experience for our students, promoting not only language proficiency but also cultural appreciation and understanding.

At QuIPS, we understand the importance of providing opportunities for our students to further explore their interests beyond the regular school day. That's why we offer a range of After School Programmes that evolve with the interests and needs of the children.

Whether it's exploring new hobbies or honing existing talents, our After School Programmes provide a supportive and enriching environment for our students to thrive.

QuIPS Tots is an adult accompanied programme for children aged 7-17 months.
These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for your child to learn important socialisation skills in a safe and nurturing environment. As the children engage in Mandarin, Music and Yoga with our specialist teachers, you will also have the chance to connect with other parents and caregivers within the Sentosa Cove community.

Adult accompanied programmes

QuIPS Tots

QuIPS Play is an adult accompanied programme for children aged 18 months to under 3 years.
For parents who would like to wait for your child to be a bit older before joining school, we are now offering a weekly 2-hour playgroup for your child. As a continuation of QuIPS Tots, this programme is designed to give children opportunities to build strong friendships and ignite a love for lifelong learning through play. Each week will have a mixture of Art, Play, Mandarin and Music.
Signs ups are on a monthly or termly basis and subject to availability.
